Where do sea otters live: Sea otters live in shallow coastal waters off the northern Pacific Ocean. Their historic range stretched from Japan, along the coast of Siberia and the Aleutian Chain and down the Alaska and western coast of the United States. Sea otters were almost extinct in the early 1900s due to the fur trade; their numbers plummeted to 1,000-2,000 otters. Today, there are estimated to be just over 106,000 worldwide.
